The Sujani Storytelling Jacket: A Living Archive
Where History Meets the Wardrobe
The Sujani Chore jacket is more than a garment; it is a 200-year-old narrative stitched into the fabric of time. Originating in the 18th century in the Mithila region of Bihar, India, Sujani (from Su, meaning facilitating, and Jani, meaning birth) began as a mother’s first gift to her newborn.
These quilts were the original masters of up-cycling. Women would layer old, softened cotton saris and bind them together with thousands of meticulous, hand-run stitches, creating a “soft hug” for their children.
The Art of the “Quiet Archive”
Every inch of this jacket tells a story. Look closely at the embroidery – these aren’t just patterns, they are a visual diary. Traditionally, Sujani artisans stitched what they saw and what they dreamt of:
- Ancient Symbols: Sun, moon, and fish motifs representing life, fertility, and protection.
- Social Narratives: Modern Sujani often depicts scenes of village life, feminine strength, and the pursuit of education.
The Modern Transformation
We have taken these vintage, hand-quilted masterpieces and reimagined them for the modern silhouette. By up-cycling these storied quilts into structured jackets, we are giving “slow fashion” a second life.
Why it’s special:
- One-of-a-Kind: No two jackets are identical. Each one carries the unique “handwriting” of the artisan who stitched the original quilt.
- Sustainable Heritage: We honour the zero-waste philosophy of the original craft by repurposing heirloom textiles.
- Seasonless Comfort: The layered cotton construction makes it breathable in the summer and a perfect insulating layer in the winter.
