What is Kantha Stitching?

Kantha stitched embroidery is a significant textile art from Eastern India, with a history that goes back 500 years. Originally developed as a way for Bengalis to recycle old saris, dhotis, and household textiles, the kantha technique transformed these materials into new items, like quilts, to provide warmth and comfort. Even the yarn used for the embroidery was carefully salvaged from other worn-out fabrics. Today, kantha stitching continues to inspire modern designs, including unique and stylish kantha jackets, which blend the rich heritage of up-cycling with contemporary fashion.
