Indigo Handwoven Cotton Pintuck Shirt
A beautifully simple pull-on shirt made from Kala cotton, handwoven and naturally dyed in deep indigo.
Kala cotton is a traditional Indian cotton grown in dry regions of Gujarat, where it is naturally irrigated by rain and monsoon water rather than relying on artificial irrigation. It has a wonderfully tactile, slightly textured character that makes it particularly suited to handwoven cloth.
The cotton is then taken to the Tarai Blue Indigo Farm, where organic indigo plants are grown, harvested and processed to extract the natural indigo pigment. The fabric is hand dyed using traditional vat dyeing techniques.
Eight dips into natural indigo
This particular depth of blue has been built slowly, through eight individual dips into the indigo vat.
After each dip, the cotton is lifted from the vat and allowed to oxidise naturally for around 20 minutes. As the cloth meets the air, the colour develops and deepens. Then it goes back into the vat for another dip.
Eight dips. Eight oxidising periods. Slowly building that rich, beautiful indigo blue.
It’s a process that takes time, and one of the reasons natural indigo has such extraordinary depth and character.
Made for everyday wear
The pintuck detailing adds a little structure and interest to the relaxed silhouette, while keeping the overall feel wonderfully easy to wear.
A half-way button-down placket is finished with natural coconut husk buttons, with a finely detailed pintuck bib across the front. The long sleeves feature structured button cuffs with matching pintuck accents.
Cut to fall naturally just below the waist, it’s a versatile everyday shirt that works just as happily with worn-in denim as it does with relaxed linen trousers or summer shorts.
