Our handwoven fabrics are created entirely on a hand loom, which requires no electricity. What better embodiment of slow fashion, than a material that starts as threads and only becomes fabric through the hands of skilled craftspeople!
We source our handloom fabrics from West Bengal, India. Take a look at the videos below to see the process in action…
If you’re new to the idea of weaving and want to visualise how a hand loom works, think of a larger scale woven material, like a basket or a wall hanging. In the same way, a hand loom is used to weave vertical threads – or the ‘warp’ – with horizontal threads – the ‘weft’.
The loom itself holds the warp threads in place with tension, so that the weft threads can be placed alternating above and below using a weaving shuttle. Think of the under/over pattern of a weave at the small, intricate level of individual threads.
This process is used with different colours, tensions and techniques to create all types of patterned textiles. One look at the range of our handloom collection below and you can imagine all of the possibilities!
