NATURALLY DYED LINEN – INDIGO PICNIC DRESS

A dress with a beautifully flowing swing to wear everyday.

Made and dyed on the Tarai blue indigo farm as part of our Seed to Closet collection.

The process behind this style –

To begin we first cut and sew the linen into the dress. The  dress is made first so that we can place the stripes tied in using waxed string, so that the indigo won’t penetrate under the tightly wound string. The linen bundle is then dyed 6-8 dips in the natural tarai blue indigo vat. After each dip it is allowed to oxidize in the Uttarakhand air. Slowly the indigo hue deepens with each dip.

Once we are happy with the depth of shade we rinse in cool water and then unwind the bindings to reveal the unique stripes.

Each piece has its own unique stripe patterns due to the binding process. I love watching the reveal of unwinding each stripe – it’s always exciting.

Note – This dress has been crafted using natural indigo. Colour rub off is a natural characteristic of this process. Please avoid contact with light colours and upholstery to begin with. The indigo colour will slowly fade over time.
