What is Kantha?

Kantha is a style of stitching found in Indian embroidery, traditionally found in Bangladesh, Bengal, Odisha and Tripura.

Classically created originally by stacking old saris onto each other and hand stitching them together using a simple running stitch to make a thin cushioned layer. Traditionally Bengali women layered together old discarded saris and clothing with the simple kantha style stitching to make a bedspread or bed cushion.

Kantha stitched embroidery is one of the most important textile arts in Eastern india. It can be traced back 500 years as a way the Bengalis recycled old saris, dhotis and household textiles. By using the kantha technique they up-cycled their old textiles into quilts for warmth and comfort. Even the yarn used to make the embroidery was salvaged from the other textiles and clothing.

Love my new Khanta Coat wanted one with subtle colours this model is exactly what I was looking for ! Looking forward to wear it when the weather is warmer. I’m definitely ordering another one soon but this time more colour.

I actually have a different colour as changed my mind just before Lisa despatched the jacket out.
Absolutely love this jacket , it is very oversized for me as I would usually take a small however it works . Love the giant pockets this is a massive ✅ for me the fact that the sleeves can be rolled up and the beautiful aged fabric which is so soft. Will just get better the more it’s worn too. I love the fact that a fix and repair service is offered too. just gives me so much confidence in the brand. This is recycling and repurposing at it’s best. I’ve already purchased and received a fabulous waistcoat and will certainly be buying more in the future.
