NOTE ON PATTERN MAKING PROCESS
Each piece begins by the fabric first being scoured (cleaned so that the dye takes well) then it is passed to Daniela – who sews it into the hoari style. Lisa then mordants the it by soaking in alum lactate ( this is a substance derived from the uk sugar industry) by mordanting the fabric it helps it become colourfast and allows it to hold onto the colour once dyed. A day later once the mordant has done its job Lisa can lay the jacket out and cover it with the red onion skins, cutch, madder and rose leaves. The jacket then gets rolled up tightly and tied like a swiss roll and steamed for one hour or so to bind the botanical inks into the fabric. They are then allowed to cool. Once cool they have all the botanical leaves and skins shaken off, rinsed in cold water and then washed at 30 degrees in the washing machine to confirm colourfastness.
This process is made with a lot of love and care. Each jacket will have the same pattern tones but will be a tiny bit different due to the random way these eco printed patterns are made.
